Is Your Brake Light Switch Stuck? Here Are Helpful Tips

The brake light switch in your vehicle has a very significant function. Applying pressure on the brake pedal makes it turn on the brake light switch, which in turn turns on the brake lights.

Other road users will, therefore, be aware that you are braking, which helps in averting possible accidents. Since there are a number of things that can make the brake light switch to become stuck, you should have some idea about how to fix the problem.

Some of the things that can make a brake pedal switch fail include applying too much pressure on the brake pedal, dust, and other debris. Use a suitable source of light to see the switch on the floor of the car so that you can determine the problem.

Use your finger to press on the button and move it from side to side, which should make it pop up. If this does not do the trick or you notice that the button is not really stuck, then the problem lies elsewhere.

Inspect the brake lights themselves to determine whether they are functioning. Remove the cover gently and then unscrew the bulb. Put another bulb in its place and test whether it turns on.

If this still fails, then check the fuses in the fuse box, which is usually found beneath the dashboard on the driver’s side. Check your car’s manual so that you can determine the exact position of the fuse box and the specific fuse for the brake lights.

You may also need to check the connection from the battery. Try resetting the system by removing the cables from the battery and putting them back before restarting the car.
