How to Change the Fuel Filter

The fuel filter replacement depends on the mileage you’ve made and the quality of the fuel you use is a part of regular maintenance on the car and every driver should know how to change the fuel filter on the car. So, let’s learn how to do that, and let’s change the fuel filter.

How to Change Fuel Filter

Depending on the model of the car, the fuel filter is placed:

  1. In the engine space (usually at a visible place)
  2. Near the gas tank (usually put near the tank in an easy-access place).
  3. In the gas tank, combined with the fuel pump (this a rare case).

If the filter on your car is in a position described under no.3, we recommend that you let a qualified mechanic do the job. That’s because it’s a complicated job and you have to remove all the fuel from the tank. So, whatever model you drive, the first thing you do is locate the filter position.

Tools That You Need to Change Fuel Filter

Basic tools that you need to change the fuel filter

  1. Set of wrenches that match the job
  2. Multi-purpose screwdriver
  3. Pair of pliers
  4. Container for the fuel that leaks out.

Fuel Filter Changing Procedure

If the filter is near the fuel tank secure the car so you can work underneath it, but a car canal would be the best solution.

  1. Disconnect the wiring (if there is any), some filters have sensors that warn when the filter is clogged. If not, begin with step 2.
  2. Disconnect the fuel lines that go to and from the filter. If the lines are tightly sealed to the filter, use the pliers, apply a gentle grip, rotate them and pull off.
  3. Turn the removed lines up-side, to reduce the fuel leakage. WATCH YOURSELF!! THE LINES MIGHT BE UNDER PRESSURE SO THE FUEL MAY SPRAY AROUND WHILE DISCONNECTING THE LINES. WATCH ESPECIALLY YOUR EYES AND MOUTH!!
  4. Losen the filter holder with the proper wrench or screwdriver. Remove the old filter.
  5. Take the new filter and put it in the filter holder. Tighten the holder.
  6. Reconnect the fuel lines and the wiring (if any).
  7. Start the car and check for any possible leaks.

In case the filter is located in the engine space, do the same procedure, The only difference is it will be much easier because you don’t have to go under the car. On some cars, the filter has a different holder. The filter is simply screwed on or of to the holder. This is a much less complicated system.

In that case, just unscrew the filter (hold it up-side so You don’t spill fuel around the engine). Apply a thin film of motor oil to the gasket of the new filter and screw it back into place. Tighten with your hand. Be prepared to possibly get some fuel on yourself, so wear some old clothing.
