How to Make Tyres Last Longer

Having reliable tyres on your car is critical if you plan to travel any distance without breaking down due to a tyre blowout. There are several ways that you can extend the life of your tyres so they will last as long as possible.

Having reliable tyres on your car is critical if you plan to travel any distance without breaking down due to a tyre blowout. There are several ways that you can extend the life of your tyres so they will last as long as possible.

Always Keep Your Tyres Properly Inflated

You should always check your tyres whenever you stop for fuel and before you get into your car in the morning. There are several key things that you should be looking for when you visually inspect your tyres, but if you notice that your tyre has a bulge located on it, the tyre could have low pressure.

If you prefer to complete a more accurate inspection, you can check all of your tyres’ pressure with a pressure gauge. You can choose from the regular gauges or the digital gauges that are on the market. A digital gauge will give you a more accurate reading, but most people are comfortable with the pencil or manual gauges. You can also choose a plastic gauge. These are less expensive than the other types, but the readings may not be as accurate.

Cars that are equipped with a pressure monitoring system will alert you when your tyre pressure is low. You will need to add air to your tyres as soon as you receive this warning. If you do not know the amount of pressure that you need to add to your tyres, you can refer to the sticker that is located inside the driver’s door. The car manual will also let you know how much pressure should be added to the tyres.

The correct tyre pressures will not only allow you to have better traction on the roads; it will also help increase the distance that you can travel on one tank of fuel.

Balance and Rotate the Tyres

Your tyres should be balanced and rotated after every other time you have your oil changed. If you purchased the tyres at the same location where you are having your oil changed, they may rotate and balance your tyres free of charge. The benefit of rotating and balancing your tyres is twofold. You will extend the life of your tyres, and a proper tyre balance will help reduce the amount of vibration that you feel when you are driving your car.

Avoid Hazards That Are In the Road

There are several things that can increase the chances of your tyres becoming damaged whilst you are driving:

  • Driving your car too fast
  • Constant braking
  • Sudden and frequent stopping
  • Driving on unpaved or rough roads

Potholes are one of your tyre’s worst enemies, and you should avoid driving into potholes if you want to preserve your tyres. You should be especially careful of new potholes. They usually form after a heavy rain or snow.

If you cannot avoid driving into a pothole, try to slow down as much as possible versus swerving into another lane to avoid it. Tyres that are properly maintained will not be subjected to as much damage from the pothole. Tyres that are balding or not properly inflated will sustain greater damage.

These are just a few of the things that you can begin to do today so you can help your tyres last for a longer period of time.
